The Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) Investment Strategy documents represent the investment of NHT funds. These documents are produced to represent the Board’s intention to provide to its community members strategic development and implementation of projects across the region that address a wide range of issues.
The Eyre Peninsula NRM Board is committed to striving for on-ground works that will lead to enhancing our natural resources while fulfilling the three criteria of the NHT funding requirements. These being:
Biodiversity conservation
The conservation of Australia’s biodiversity through the protection and restoration of terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine and marine ecosystems and habitat for native plants and animals.
Sustainable use of natural resources
The sustainable use and management of Australia's land, water and marine resources to maintain and improve the productivity and profitability of resource-based industries.
Community capacity building and institutional change
Support for individuals, landholders, communities, industry and organisation with skills, knowledge, information and institutional frameworks to increase capacity to implement biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource use and management.
07-08 Investment Strategy
An open call was made for potential on-ground projects with a closing date on 31 August 2006. The call for projects specified that projects should align with the following areas:
- Support for Regional Capacity
- Integrated Catchment Management
- Integrated Weed Management
- Habitat Management for Species Survival
- Developing Capacity to Preserve the Marine Environment
- Landscape Management for Sustainable Agriculture
Project submissions were scored during both technical assessment and prioritisation phases and ranked according to score. At the conclusion of the prioritisation phase, scores were consolidated to provide an overall ranking of projects. As was expected, the requests for funds exceeded the funds available, thereby providing the Eyre Peninsula NRM Board with a challenge to facilitate and implement on-ground works in an equitable and strategic manner. It is the considered opinion of the NRM Board that the amalgamation of 'like' projects into project categories will enable local project implementation to drive a strategic approach to whole of region benefit. For this reason, the 2007-2010 Investment Strategy presented represents the following 5 project categories:
- Biodiversity
- Water and Riparian Management
- Coast and Marine
- Soils (Land Management)
- Community Support and Capacity
